While Reynolds developed a 'Grand Manner' of painting which referenced classical art and Italian Renaissance masters, Gainsborough placed his sitters in contemporary, often natural, settings. More than any other portrait by Gainsborough, this shows the artist's extraordinary ability to draw on the grand style of past masters and yet create something unmistakably his. Rembrandt might have intended the circles to be a display of his own artistic skill. This is the only known painting by the artist to have survived in such excellent condition.

This walking tour explores the area’s Puerto Rican heritage, colorful public art, and lush green space. The 2nd Earl died in 1796, and ownership passed to his son, David William Murray, 3rd Earl of Mansfield. Zucchi’s paintings, as well as the architecture and furnishings that Adam designed for this space, acted as a monument to William Murray’s achievements.

The design, with its curved ceiling, was inspired by Ancient Roman thermae (public bathhouses). The ceiling was completed in 1769 and features 13 paintings of classical scenes by Italian painter Antonio Zucchi. The first house on the site was probably built in the early 17th century.

Part of the grounds were purchased by the Kenwood Preservation Society and the rest bought by Lord Iveagh of the Guinness family in 1925 and gifted it to the nation in 1927 on his death. Many of the paintings in the house were from his collection, with works by artists including Vermeer, Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. Their home will likely appear more modern than the many of the regal, 19th century homes often found in the historic neighborhood. The new property is also across the street from KAM Isaiah Israel, a nearly century-old, Byzantine-style synagogue designed by Chicago architect Alfred Alschuler.

Most homes have some risk of natural disasters, and may be impacted by climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. The house and part of the grounds were bought from the 6th Earl of Mansfield in 1925 by Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, and donated to the nation in 1927. Zucchi's paintings in the four, quadrangular panels relate to the function of the room as a library. Each of these paintings depicts an allegory of four areas of knowledge represented in Murray’s extensive book collection. Framed within the plasterwork are 13 ceiling paintings by the Venetian artist Antonio Zucchi.Zucchi was persuaded by Robert and James Adam to come to London and work for their architectural practice as a decorative painter.

It is considered one of Adam’s greatest interiors anywhere with its neoclassical arrangement, decorative frieze and ceiling. During his time as a judge, Lord Mansfield was involved in law cases examining the legality of the slave trade, potentially partly motivated by his relationship with Dido. For example, in 1772, as Lord Chief Justice, he ruled that slavers could not legally send slaves in England away from the country. She was educated and raised as one of the family at Kenwood House, highly unusual for the time. In 1746 John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, acquired the house and most likely added the Orangery.

This painting, considered one of the great achievements of the time, sets the stage for the famous rivalry between Sir Joshua Reynolds and the artist here, Thomas Gainsborough. The first house on the site is probably a brick structure built by John Bill, King James I's printer. The Obamas purchased their property from a doctor for $1.65 million, $300,000 under its asking price. Rita Rezko bought the adjacent vacant land for full price at $625,000. In 2006, the former president and first lady purchased a strip of that undeveloped land from Rita Rezko for $104,500. The property is fenced off — along with the block, which is closed off to vehicle traffic — but workers and equipment could be seen at the home last week.
